On Thursday, July 20, 1972, Marylou's mother dropped her off at a house on Broad Street in Waverly, NY where Marylou was supposed to be babysitting. It was Marylou's 16th birthday so, later on, her mother returned to the house with a cake and some gifts. The people at the house told Mrs Bostwick that Marylou had never arrived. Mrs Bostwick knew the people were lying and this was proven later when some of Marylou's belongings, including a change of clothes, were found in the house. Police were called and a search was conducted but Marylou was not found.
On Monday, October 29, 1973, another local girl, Sharon Coston, of Sayre, left her home to go for a pack of cigarettes and never returned. A hunter found her body on November 2, 1973 in Athens, near the Blue Swan Airport. She had been strangled and mutilated. Gerard McKenna, of Sayre, was convicted in Sharon's death.
Marylou's mother always believed that the disappearance of her daughter and the murder of Sharon Coston were related. The suspect in Marylou's disappearance and murder was given immunity for his testimony in the case against McKenna. He subsequently moved out of the area and was never charged in Marylou's death.
Marylou Bostwick remains missing.
